Aluminium doors
Where the opening is wide, the glass is heavy and the frame needs to disappear.
Strength buys you glass
Aluminium carries more load per millimetre of frame than uPVC, which is the whole point of it: you get taller panels, wider spans and far more glass in the same opening. On a rear extension it is usually the difference between three panels and five.
Modern systems are thermally broken - a resin barrier separates inner and outer frame - so the cold-bridge objection that applied to 1980s aluminium no longer holds.
