Windows and doors in Haddenham
Windows and doors in Haddenham - witchert walls, a strict conservation area and a village where the wrong frame shows immediately.
Fitting in Haddenham
Haddenham is fifteen minutes from the showroom and genuinely unlike anywhere else we work. The village is built in witchert - a local chalky earth walling material - and its lanes of white-rendered walls and thatched cottages are protected accordingly.
It is a village where a badly chosen window is visible from the street, so we take a conservative line on what we recommend.
Witchert, thatch and everything after
Around Church End, the Duck Pond and Townside the buildings are old, low and rendered, with small openings and deep reveals. Flush casements in a heritage colour are almost always the right answer; sashes appear on the later Georgian frontages. Anything with a wide, proud frame looks wrong immediately.
The village has grown considerably since the 1960s, and the estates around Woodways, Fern Lane and Sheerstock are conventional post-war and modern housing where casement replacement, composite doors and garden rooms are the everyday work. Haddenham also has a strong appetite for insulated garden buildings - long plots and home working make a Radley Room an easy decision.

Witchert walls and the conservation area
Haddenham's conservation area is one of the more carefully policed in the Vale, and there are numerous listed buildings, several with witchert walls that are themselves protected. Fixing into or altering a witchert wall is not a job for a standard install crew - it needs lime-based making good and a light touch.
We survey these properties individually, will tell you when a job needs listed building consent, and will decline work we do not think should be done to a building.
